Calgary AI Research Labs

Biomedical Engineering

The Advanced Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Lab (AI2Lab) is led by Drs. Roberto Souza and Mariana Bento within the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.

The changing human-environment relationship reveals significant information about people’s health and wellbeing. As mobile technology and digital information grow in our cities, new approaches to study the interconnectivity between the human-environment relationship and human health are emerging. The mission of the Healthy City Lab – directed by Dr. Sayeh Bayat – is to study this inter-connectivity and work toward a framework of ubiquitous health for intelligent and sustainable solutions that support older adults and individuals with chronic diseases within cities.

Computer Science

The Biometric Technologies Lab is led by Dr. Marina L. Gavrilova. She is a full professor and the Order of the University of Calgary recipient. The students in the lab work on a variety of projects from biometric identification and recognition to multi-modal systems design, human-centered computing, data fusion and using biometric features in security applications.

Electrical and Software Engineering

The Advanced Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Lab (AI2Lab) is led by Drs. Roberto Souza and Mariana Bento within the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary.

The Calgary Intelligent Secure Hardware Group is led by Dr. Benjamin Tan. The lab works on improving system-on-chip security and hardware security using machine learning.

The Calgary Machine Learning Lab is a research group led by Yani Ioannou within the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary. The lab has a research focus on improving Deep Neural Network (DNN) training and models, in particular for computer vision applications. Topics of research include: Sparse Neural Network Training, Bias and Robustness of Efficient Deep Learning methods and Domain-Agnostic Self-Supervised Learning.
